So the States in now in recess until 2:30pm on 5th September, when the Autumn Session will start with the first question time since the 18th July. Members will all be busy with various things. I for one will be catching up on constituency work after the particularly intensive schedule of States sittings. I wish all my colleagues a restful summer. DJ Dino and I would like to dedicate this Jonny Nash song to all my colleagues on the Council of Ministers in anticipation of the 5th September... Enjoy.

And in case you want another video, here is a link to Senator Ozouf's speech in 2008 hustings in which he says : 'I do not make promises I cannot keep.'

Monfort,
ReplyDeleteCan you please explain to me how, in this 21st Century where we are moving ever closer in Jersey to being a 24/7 working society, it is logical (or acceptable) for the government to go into recess for a month and a half in the middle of every year?

Montfort,
ReplyDeleteAs his Empire crumbles, those with a sense of humour and irony will enjoy Philip Ozouf's greatest speech given at the St Helier Senatorial hustings in 2008. The music Bob Dylan - It's all over now Baby Blue. How prescient?

Now that the summer recess has commenced can you tell the public who is the States Member who refuses to do any parliamentary work during this holiday period?
ReplyDeleteThe Chairmen's Committee considered the matter and referred it to PPC in order to draft a protocal on the matter. But is the electorate not entitled to know about their representative(s) who demand such lengthy breaks?
C'mon Monty - spill the beans.
To address the first comments about a summer recess - I am not sure of the wrongs or rights of it. However, what I would say is that it is only States meetings which stop for a period of 6 weeks - the other duties of a deputy, constable and Senator continue. Indeed, for many of us, this is an equally busy period where we are able to catch up on/turn our attention to other matters. For example, this week, I have been able to concentrate on two planning matter, including representing (successfully) a constituent at the Planning Applications Panel, visiting the site of another proposed building in a sensitive area of St Brelade, talking to residents their and writing to planning on their behalf. Friday I was visiting a constituent in Les Quennevais who is in the middle of a family crisis, combined with ill health. We will be attending Social Security for advice next week. So work does go on for many of us. And in many ways, it is more productive than in the States chamber

And to address the second point about the States member who refuses to do ANY parliamentary work during the recesses?

Montfort.
ReplyDeleteLenny Harper tells Ben Shenton, Sean Power and Jimmy (Potty Mouth) Perchard to PRODUCE SOME EVIDENCE
Tom,
ReplyDeleteI don't know who those are that refuse to do any work during the recess. There are those who seem to do little work at any time of the year.
deputy gorst dose not work in recess
ReplyDeleteAre you a Ministerial candidate Monty? Have you any suggestions who might be "progressive" ministerial material - in fact do you know which existing "progressive" members are even standing in October?
ReplyDeleteSurely the voting public has a right to know such things by now?
